PES: A coalition is being formed today that would overthrow Mujović due to the results achieved

Today, a coalition is being formed that would overthrow Podgorica Mayor Saša Mujović due to the results achieved, the Europe Now Movement (PES) announced.

"In order for Srđan Perić to be elected President of the Capital City Assembly, a position that represents the legislative power in Podgorica, it is necessary for him to transparently secure the necessary parliamentary majority. After today's public appearance by Mr. Perić, it has also become formally clear which political structures, together with his party, form the new majority and assume the greatest responsibility for the future governance of the Capital City," the PES statement states.

The president of the Preokret movement, Srđan Perić, said at today's press conference that they have received public support from the Democratic People's Party (DNP) and written support from the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS). He said at the press conference that they have some more indications of support, which meets the conditions for the election of the president of the Capital City Assembly. "Vijesti" reported today that the DPS and the European Union have supported Perić for the president of the Capital City Assembly. On June 11, the DNP announced that it would support Perić for the president of the Capital City Assembly in a technical mandate.

"Attempts to convince the public that the President of the Assembly in the Capital City has an exclusively technical or control role are reminiscent of the already seen and unsuccessful political experiment of the minority government of Dritan Abazović. At that time, cooperation with the DPS was presented as the allegedly only possible solution for unblocking European integration, only to soon show that such a model has neither political stability nor long-term sustainability. That is why a coalition is being formed today that would overthrow Mayor Mujović due to the results achieved, in a similar scenario to when the then Minister of Finance Milojko Spajić was dismissed, after the announcement of the implementation of the Europe Now 1 program," the PES statement reads.

The party said that because of this, "it is increasingly obvious that the problematization of the legal institute of compulsory administration is not an expression of sincere concern for unblocking the work of local self-government, but rather an attempt to create a political alibi for the formation of unprincipled and difficult-to-sustain coalitions."

"We would like to remind you that the rules that provide for the introduction of compulsory administration were not adopted during the mandate of the current government, but precisely during the period of power of the political entities that today make up or support Perić's new majority. This mechanism has been applied for years in numerous Montenegrin municipalities, without serious objections from those who are currently trying to present it as an allegedly undemocratic or usurping solution," said PES.

They state that neither they nor Mujović caused the crisis in Podgorica.

"It arose as a result of the DNP's decision to leave power due to the Botun Wastewater Treatment Plant project. This also represents the greatest political contradiction, because the new majority, along with Preokret, DPS, European Union, URU and SEP, will also comprise the DNP. The party that spent months building a political campaign on opposing the construction of the plant in Botun now obviously has no problem cooperating with those who supported the project from the beginning and have not given up on their positions. This makes it clear that the Botun issue was never the essential reason for the political crisis, but only an occasion for the re-composition of the political majority in Podgorica," said PES.
