Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović will address members of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg today and present the results that Montenegro has achieved in the European integration process and reform priorities in the next phase.
Milatović will, as announced by his office, speak at the EP at the invitation of the President of that parliament, Roberta Metsola.
The statement states that Milatović's address comes at a particularly important moment for Montenegro, following the European Union (EU) - Western Balkans Summit held in Tivat, which brought together the highest European and regional officials and further confirmed the European perspective of the region.
"Just a few days later, Montenegro will present the progress achieved and its ambition to become the 28th member of the EU before one of the most important institutions of the Union," said Milatović's office.
According to them, after hosting the Summit in Tivat, Milatović's address to the EP is an important diplomatic step in strengthening Montenegro's international position and providing stronger political support for accelerating its European path.
As announced, Milatović will discuss Montenegro's European path, the dynamics of accession negotiations, and the importance of the EP's political support in the final phase of the country's European integration with the heads of parliamentary groups of the largest European political clubs in Strasbourg.
"Milatović will present to the European Parliament the results that Montenegro has achieved in the European integration process, reform priorities in the next phase and the message that Montenegro is ready to bring the accession process to its final stage," the statement said.
It is stated that Milatović will particularly point out the fact that Montenegro is today the most prepared candidate country for EU membership and that it has a real chance of becoming its 28th member.
As stated by the President's Office, Milatović will say in his address that European integration is not just a foreign policy priority, but the most important state task that requires responsibility, political maturity and commitment from all institutions.
"Democratic changes in previous years and new political momentum after 2023 have opened up space for Montenegro to once again make European integration a dynamic, credible and achievable process, with a clear ambition to become an EU member by 2028," the statement said.
Milatović will, as reported, say that Montenegro is not looking for shortcuts, but that through reforms, responsibility and a clear European vision, it is confirming that it can be the next member of the European family.
"Montenegro's success would be a strong message to the entire region that the European path makes sense, that results are valued, and that enlargement is once again one of the key policies for a safer, more stable, and more united Europe," the statement said.
Milatović's office said that the invitation to address the EP represents a strong political signal and confirmation of his role in positioning Montenegro as a leader in European integration in the region.
