Anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide marked in Bijelo Polje

Srebrenica did not begin in Srebrenica, but on the day when hatred became politics, when lies became truth, when man ceased to be a man, said Alija Kujović, president of the Majlis of the Islamic Community in Bijelo Polje.

He said this today in Bijelo Polje, where the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide was traditionally marked by laying wreaths and flowers at the "Hour of Life" memorial.

"That's why the fight against the new Srebrenica doesn't start in Potočari. It starts in every city where we have the courage to oppose the same ideology that led to it. That's why Srebrenica is also in Bijelo Polje. That's why it's our obligation to remember Šahovići, Lim Valley, Štrpce and every place where a person suffered just because they were who they are," said Kujović.

The President of the Municipal Assembly, Selma Omerović, emphasized that today we are marking one of the most tragic and moving events in modern European history.

"More than three decades have passed since the crime committed against the innocent Bosniak population, but the pain of the victims' families, as well as our obligation to preserve their memory, has not faded. Remembering Srebrenica is not only an expression of respect for the innocent victims, but also a moral and civilizational duty of all of us. It is an obligation to cherish the truth, to oppose the denial of the crime and to build a society based on justice, responsibility and mutual respect," said Omerović.

She reminded that Bijelo Polje, as a city of multi-ethnicity and mutual respect, has a special responsibility for all of us to be an example of understanding, solidarity and dialogue, while affirming the values ​​that connect us.

After the laying of wreaths and flowers, the exhibition "Childhood in War: Drawings from Srebrenica" was held in the city park.
