European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Cos said in Brussels that today is a "super Tuesday" for European Union (EU) enlargement due to accession conferences with four candidate countries on the same day.
Kos announced at IX that so many conferences are being held on the same day for the first time in more than 20 years, and today Montenegro, Ukraine, Moldova and Albania are participating.
"Our leaders Ukraine, Moldova, Albania and Montenegro are all making great strides forward," Kos stated, adding that Montenegro is at the head of that column, as the most advanced country in accession negotiations.
The Commissioner stated that Ukraine and Moldova are opening Cluster 6 "which includes areas such as defense and security, where the arguments for their EU membership are particularly strong."
"Albania will close its first chapters, and Montenegro is firmly in the final phase of formal negotiations, having closed 18 out of 33 chapters," she added.
Kos said that today's momentum must translate into "concrete results on the ground."
"Today is a day for both celebration and looking to the future. We have the support of the member states, but only if the candidate countries meet the conditions," she concluded.
