Irish Minister for European Affairs Thomas Byrne said that they believe that the negotiation process with Montenegro on accession to the European Union could be completed by the end of the year.

He said this in a video he posted on X, ahead of the Intergovernmental Conference in Brussels.

Ireland took over the presidency of the Council of the EU at the beginning of July, and Montenegro is due to close two more negotiation chapters today, bringing the total to 18 out of 33 chapters.

Prime Minister Milojko Spajić is leading the delegation that will participate in the conference, which will close the negotiation Chapter 8 - Competition and Chapter 29 - Customs Union.

Bern, Spajić and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos will hold a press conference starting at 16 p.m.
