Attorney and prominent jurist Dražen Medojević was elected president of the Judicial Council.
In two rounds of voting, a stalemate was reached because he and the prominent lawyer Miodrag Iličković each had four votes.
The possible problem was resolved by Iličković, who withdrew his candidacy, which resulted in Medojević being elected president of the Judicial Council.
After the announcement, Medojević remarked that his colleague Iličković had preceded him and thanked him for the election and proclaimed Iličković as his deputy.
"Let's continue to make good results and choices," said Medojević.
Opening the session of the new Judicial Council, Supreme Court President Valentina Pavličić said that in the EU integration process it is important to show that the judiciary has the capacity to introduce reforms.
She announced that it is stipulated that the election of the president and deputy president of the Judicial Council is carried out at the constituent session.
She stated that the president of the state had already issued a decree, which began the new convocation of the SS.
"You are aware that President Jakov Milatović issued a decree proclaiming the Judicial Council on July 1, which was published in the Official Gazette 95/2026 of July 3, so I congratulate all members on their election and proclamation," Pavličić stated.
Iličković said that he was abstaining from voting and the manner in which it would be done since he, along with Medojević, is a possible candidate for president of the Judicial Council.
Professor Radoje Korac said that he would not participate in the vote after the expiration of the mandate of the previous convocation because his position as president also ended, but that he would remain a member until the end of September, when his four-year mandate in the SS expires.
Such a situation could have created a problem because there are currently only 8 members in that body, and a two-thirds majority, or 7 members, is required to elect the president, but a solution was found to conduct the election by secret ballot with Korac's proposal that "everyone vote."
Iličković nevertheless voted after that.
The new members of the Judicial Council from among judges were elected at the Conference of Judges: Milenka Seka Žižić, Mirjana Vlahović, Veljko Radovanović and Mirza Ademović, and the President of the Supreme Court is also a member of that body by function.
