It is already too late to limit global warming to no more than 1,5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, a German meteorologist and climatologist warned on Monday, ahead of a climate forum being held in Berlin.
Meteorologist and climatologist Mojib Latif told German media group Bayern on Monday that "with today's greenhouse gas emissions, we will exceed this level in a little less than ten years."
"If you consider what politicians are doing all over the world now, we are three degrees more in the direction. We are getting closer to the point where we have to admit – Time is up," Latif continued.
Three degrees of global warming would be a "catastrophe," Latif stressed, pointing out that there always seemed to be more priority issues than climate protection to deal with.
Ministers from forty countries will discuss the next steps to be taken in the fight against climate change at the Petersburg Climate Dialogue, which is being held on Monday and Tuesday in Berlin, reports N1.
The hosts of the meeting are Germany and Egypt. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi are scheduled to address the meeting.
The meeting is part of the first discussions to determine the agenda of the COP27 UN climate conference, which is scheduled to take place in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh in early November.
