Shanghai started using the first inhalable Covid-19 vaccine today, and it will be a free booster dose for people who have already been vaccinated, according to a statement from the Chinese health authorities.
Vaccination against Covid is not compulsory in China, but authorities want as many people as possible to receive booster doses before strict restrictions are eased as measures to combat the pandemic, which is slowing the economy at a time when the rest of the world has lifted most measures.
In the video, published online by China's state-run media company, people who want to get vaccinated can be seen holding a short pump to their mouths, inhaling the medicine and holding their breath for five seconds.
The new technology vaccine could protect against the virus even before it reaches the rest of the respiratory system, although this would depend in part on the amount of exposure to the virus.
In September, China approved a vaccine developed by its company CanSino Biologics as an additional dose.
