In the previous period, the Montenegrin Government provided all the necessary support to the media in the direction of improving freedom of expression, said the Minister of European Affairs, Aleksandar Andrija Pejović.
The Ministry of European Affairs held a meeting of the Working Group for Chapter 23, Judiciary and Fundamental Rights, which was dedicated to freedom of expression, media financing and media advertising of state bodies.
"The aim of the meeting was to consider the evaluations and recommendations from the European Commission Report related to freedom of expression and to consider ways to overcome the perceived shortcomings and improve the situation in that area," the statement said.
In addition to the head of the Working Group, Marijana Laković Drašković and members, the meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the Agency for Electronic Media, the Agency for the Protection of Competition and the Administration for Public Procurement, as well as non-governmental organizations, the Center for Civic Education and the Center for the Development of Non-Governmental Organizations.
Opening the meeting, Pejović recalled the evaluations from this year's European Commission Report related to that area and indicated the need for all competent institutions to look at the current situation and consider ways to improve the situation.
"The minister recalled that during the previous period, the Government provided all the necessary support to the media in the direction of improving freedom of expression and conveyed full readiness and support in establishing a sustainable self-regulatory mechanism," the statement said.
The representative of the Center for Civic Education, Ana Vujošević, presented the results of research on media financing from public funds for the last three years, with a special focus on 2015.
"The need to present the challenges in this area in the form of information to the Government was jointly stated, in order to reach appropriate conclusions for further action," the announcement states.
