On Thursday evening, an exhibition of paintings, photographs, and useful items made of recycled material, which were made by young people with disabilities gathered in the NGO Nova šanska, was opened in Herzegnov's "Josip Bepo Benković" gallery on Thursday evening.
"For the first time, this gallery opened its doors to people with disabilities, our fellow citizens who we often forget. The energy, persistence, struggle for life that you feel when you visit their workshop is simply incredible. I understand a bit about craftsmanship and art, and I can judge that these are exceptional works. Therefore, they should not thank us, but we should thank them, for this beauty that they brought tonight", said the director of Gallery Đuro Beli Prijić at the opening.
The exhibition, which was organized on the eve of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, was an opportunity for members of the NGO Nova šanska to show the results of months of work on a project supported by the Employment Agency. With the instructors-professors of fine arts, the young people successfully mastered painting and photography techniques, as well as making useful items from recycled materials.
But more important than acquiring new skills was the feeling that they are useful as members of society, point out Aleksandar Avramović, Radenko Andrić and Željko Banićević, who excelled in making baskets from recycled paper.
His mother Milojka Andrić is also satisfied with Radenko's success, who appeals to the competent authorities to support similar projects.
"Even though they are discriminated in some way, with this exhibition they show how talented they are and how much they can do when society supports them, says the president of the NGO Nova šanska Vesna Odalović. He points out that the project is over, but that the young people who gained new skills and knowledge in it continue to come to their premises and hang out with the new friends they made during the training, which was the goal.
The NGO "New Chance in Novi", founded eight years ago, deals with providing all kinds of assistance to persons with developmental disabilities. It brings together professionals who deal with various aspects of caring for people with developmental disabilities (medical rehabilitation, education, social assistance) and all interested individuals and groups of citizens who want to contribute to the better integration of people with developmental disabilities. So far, they have implemented over 20 projects, among which are: Let's give them a chance (teaching assistant, parents in the home, Our ID card psychological support for young people in the home), Our ID card, Personal assistant, Support and promotion of the employment of PWDs through an example of good practice. Members of the NGO New Chance are participants in events organized by the city, among which those of a humanitarian character stand out.
