After several false alarms, when the people of Nikšić confused the stork with a great white heron, the Center for the Protection and Study of Birds (CZIP) announced that the Kočani settlement in Nikšić has a new resident, a bird that is a symbol of birth.

The appearance of a stork in that settlement, where the bird has been for 15 days, is a good sign for CZIP that the storks are returning to Montenegro.

Two more storks nest in Montenegro, one in Rožaje and one in Berane. The storks actually arrived in those cities in pairs, but this fall they headed to Africa alone.

CZIP, with the support of Elektroprivreda Crne Gore, started telemetric monitoring of the pair that has been nesting in Berane, in Polimska Street, since 2012. That pair of white storks is ornithologically interesting considering that in the last 120 years there were no written records of nesting, and since then three generations of their birds have changed.

This year, however, only the male returned to Berane, while the female is assumed to have perished during the migration.

The CZIP states that a third stork appeared in Berane and flew over the nest, but the male chased it away.

The couple from Rožaj was assumed to be the offspring of the couple from Beran. The birds chose the chimney of the sawmill for nesting. One of the Rožaj storks was killed during the spring by a lightning strike.

"One percent of Central European storks stay at home during the winter, ten percent of them spend the winter in Slovenia, and 10 percent in Italy, Spain and Portugal. The climate in Nikšić is similar to that of Slovenia, so it is not surprising that the stork in Kočani decided to spend the winter here, and it will have enough of food", they state from CZIP.
