The way in which the first volume of the Dictionary of the Montenegrin Folk and Literary Language I (A - V) published by the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (CANU) treats lesbians, gays, bisexuals, intersexuals in the interpretations of the words "bisexual", "marriage" and "love" and queer people in Montenegro, illustrated the lack of basic knowledge, capacity to learn and master scientifically and socially confirmed facts, and awareness of us and our human rights, reported Queer Montenegro.

For Kvir Montenegro, as they state, the issue of not accepting the interpretation of words of significance for LGBTIQ persons in the CANU dictionary is a matter of dignity and self-respect.

"We believe that the words "bisexual", "marriage" and "love" are directly related to our human rights, but also other words related to the human rights of women, gender roles and national and religious minorities in Montenegro, and whose interpretations do not reflect contemporary scientific trends and social reality, were excluded from the process of scientific and research work," the announcement states.

Due to the context that is built in the dictionary, Kvir Montenegro reminds CANA, as the publisher of the Dictionary, with the examples it issues in the case of topics and determinants that today belong to LGBTIQ people, and to the same culture:

  • Bisexual people do not have two sexes, nor the gonads of the opposite sex. Intersex people have, to a certain extent, the sexual physical characteristics of both sexes.
  • Bisexual people do not only have a sexual "tendency" towards people of their own and the opposite sex. They have an emotional and sexual attraction.
  • A female person of bisexual orientation is not bisexual. The man is, and the woman is bisexual.
  • Marriage, as well as other forms of union between two people (common-law union, civil or registered partnership), in modern societies mean the union of two people of different or the same sex. The modern world and science have no qualms about it.
  • Love between two people, in the context of emotional and sexual relationships, also exists between people of the same sex. It is not reserved exclusively and only for people of different sexes.

"Adequate education about the human rights of LGBTIQ persons has an essential role and great importance in relation to the acceptance and achievement of social equality of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, intersexuals and queer persons. In this connection, we note that any books printed in the modern age do not should have examples that place them in some past times. In finding scientifically confirmed information, the authors of the dictionary did not have to go further than Montenegro. The basic glossary of LGBTIQ terms has been published in our country over the past six years several times in a number of different publications available to everyone through a basic Google search of internet content," according to Kvir.

As announced, Kvir Montenegro will send these publications to the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts in the hope that CANA will understand and accept this material as a useful source for quality continuation of work on the Dictionary.
