Residents of Grblja, on whose land the largest Roma settlement in the Budva municipality was built, near Jaz, asked the municipality and the municipal utility company to urgently find a permanent solution for more than 200 residents.
The settlement, known as Palestine, was built three decades ago as temporary housing for workers hired after the earthquake. The former barracks, erected on the ancestral lands of the old local families, have turned into a settlement, in which about 70 children now live in the worst conditions, without water or electricity.
Locals say that 37 families, with almost 200 members, mostly Roma and Egyptians, live there now.
"In the past 20 years, I have constantly asked councilor questions and I have never received an answer," said Gojko Ljubanović, on whose land the settlement was built.
Ljubanović, who is also the head of the DPS councilor club, recently criticized the director of the municipal utility Đorđe Medina at a parliamentary session, for not solving the housing issue for the workers who live in that neighborhood.
He then warned him that "thousands of square meters" had been usurped. Ljubanović claims that the location was given for use for a period of 10 months, in order to set up barracks to house people after the 1979 earthquake.
"All those people who were given temporary accommodation solved the housing issue. Some new people settled there and literally for three and a half decades, no one looks back. They live in extremely inhumane conditions, it is not worthy of a human being. We will... initiate all activities allowed by law to return our country...”.
Mayor Srđa Popović recently said that the Municipality "carries out activities to find permanent housing for the residents of Palestine."
