The media scene in Montenegro is deeply politicized and polarized, and numerous cases of attacks on journalists, media and their property are still unsolved.
This was announced by Ana Vujošević, coordinator at the Center for Civic Education (CGO), on the occasion of May 3, World Media Freedom Day.
The announcement states that the role of the media in the development of a democratic society is irreplaceable and that the authorities are obliged to provide all media and journalists with conditions for free work, without pressure or any form of censorship.
Vujošević pointed out that the World Media Day is welcomed with an overcome legal framework, especially in the part related to the possibility of government influence on the media and the media market, but also obstacles in the transformation of RTCG into a true public service.
"The Montenegrin society faces a huge challenge in the promotion of free media that practice responsible, fact-based reporting and reject official manipulations," she said.
Vujošević believes that the existence of media that can remain independent despite obvious political and economic influence and pressure is in the public interest.
She concluded that CGO will continue to fight for free and independent media through program activities.
