People who suffer from allergies should avoid birch, hazel, hornbeam, yew, cypress and nettle pollen in April.

This was shown by the results of the network of pollen measuring stations of the Environmental Protection Agency, which are located in Podgorica, Nikšić, Mojkovac, Tivat and Bar.

Tivat, as stated, covers the area with the longest vegetation period during the year, and probably with the highest pollen production. Hornbeam and cypress have high concentrations in this period.

The situation is similar in Bar, where there is a high concentration of hornbeam and yew.

The increased presence of pollutants increases the aggressiveness of pollen in the air

"Podgorica covers the area with the highest concentration of population and has significant meteorological conditions for pollen production and a very specific flow that enables pollen concentration to be applied to densely populated areas. Also, it is an area with a high concentration of atmospheric aerosols to which pollen particles are attached. The increased presence of pollutants increases the aggressiveness of the pollen, and the symptoms are intensified," says the Agency's report.

In Podgorica, according to the report from the measuring stations, among the plants with a low concentration of pollen, which can cause allergic reactions in extremely sensitive people, are the current alder, maple, ash, beech, walnut, mulberry, conifers, willows and elm, among those with moderate with a high concentration of hornbeam and oak, and from plants with a high concentration of birch, hazel, yew and nettle.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), almost a billion people worldwide suffer from some form of allergy, and in Montenegro, most citizens are allergic to ambrosia, grass and tree pollen.

Pollen concentration in the air is monitored with the beginning of flowering of hazel and alder, from the beginning of February until the end of October, i.e. the end of ragweed flowering.

Measurements cover three flowering seasons. The first includes the flowering of trees (from February to the beginning of May), the second the flowering of grasses, pines and linden (from May to the second decade of July) and the third the flowering of weeds (from the second half of July to November).

People with allergies breathe easier in the north of the country

The domain of Mojkovac station also covers Kolašin, Bijelo Polje, part of Beran and Andrijevica, that is, part of Polimlje and National Park "Biogradska gora".

"The north of Montenegro, bearing in mind the climatic conditions, is less significant in terms of pollen concentration compared to the south, due to the fact that the vegetation period is significantly shorter. Flowering begins later, and the vegetation period ends earlier, i.e. period of active temperatures. The northern part, during the growing season, has a wetter climate and lower temperature sums, which directly affects the slowing down of the pollen production process," the report says.

Currently, there are only plants in Mojkovac that emit a low concentration of pollen, such as alder, hornbeam, hazel, ash, beech, yew and elm.

As stated, Nikšić is a climatic area where the climatic conditions enable the existence of plants that will be potential "producers" of pollen. A high concentration of birch, hornbeam and yew was measured in that city.
