Montenegro creates conditions for a quality, safe and dignified life for the elderly, said the Minister for Human and Minority Rights, Suad Numanović, adding that this population and women are the least discriminated groups in Montenegrin society.

At a regional conference on the topic of expanding the scope of services for the elderly and achieving their sustainability, he said that Montenegro considers the protection of vulnerable social categories a very important area of its activity.

"Montenegro is actively creating conditions for a quality, safe and dignified life for the elderly and is committed to finding permanent solutions for a sustainable system of quality social services," said Numanović.

He noted that there is a visible effort to develop, in cooperation with municipalities, different forms of services in the field of care for the elderly.

As he stated, local governments recognize the growing need to provide a better quality of life to old fellow citizens, and the opening of new services at the local level is planned.

Numanović said that they are working on the opening of day care centers, residences for the elderly, homes and clubs, and on the promotion of help and care in the home.

The President of the Municipality of Bar, Zoran Srzentić pointed to the fact that the oldest population lives in that city.

"A large number of sunny days during the year and very favorable climatic conditions greatly contribute to the interest of members of the third generation to live in such an environment," said Srzentić.

He said that the Municipality of Bar will provide them with adequate support services, which will make their old age more meaningful, enrich it and give them the impression that they have not been forgotten.

As planned municipal activities in that area, Srzentić highlighted the work on planning a day care center and building a home for the elderly. "Because there is a large number of old people who are in a state of social need, and continuous care of them can only be conducted in such an institution".

He believes that, in the course of the next year, conditions will be created for the realization of the construction of the Home for the elderly.

The president of the municipal Red Cross organization, Slobodan Đonović, and the president of the Red Cross of Montenegro, Gordana Mijović, highlighted the very successful work of that organization, especially in Bar, in the field of care for the elderly.

"The great trust and respect towards volunteers and the organization is visible and provides motivation for subsequent and increasingly successful activities," said Mijović.

She announced that the Red Cross will focus on licensing volunteer staff in the coming period.

The conference was realized within the project "Care of the elderly", whose goal is to improve the quality of life of the elderly and provide psycho-social assistance.

Participants of the conference are representatives of the Red Cross organization from Montenegro, Italy, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
