Single mother Vera Babović with two minor children lives in very difficult conditions, in a dilapidated shack, a few hundred meters away from the elementary school "Savo Pejanović".
The two small rooms where he lives with his son Milan and daughter Ivana are full of moisture and unconditioned, and as Vera claims, "mice and bugs are their constant visitors."
Every new day for a family of three, which survives on 72 euros of social assistance and 38 euros of child benefit, brings new concerns: how to survive the winter without wood, what to eat and how to create the minimum conditions for a decent life.
Vera, who is in poor health and has had three operations, said that her son is a child with special needs, who attends the seventh grade of the Resource Center for Education and Training "1. June".
"He went to the school "Savo Pejanović" until the fourth grade, but he could not achieve what his peers did. My daughter is in the eighth grade and is an excellent student," said Vera.
Her children, instead of spending their free time at home, playing carefree, go from dumpster to dumpster, looking for something that could be used for firewood.
"The neighbors help us. They gave us half a meter of wood, but it's not enough," complained Vera.
They feed themselves by receiving one meal each from the National Kitchen, and Vera points out that a bucket with food, one and a half kilograms of bread and salad, represents breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The Babović family lived without electricity for three years, which was cut off by Elektroprivreda due to a debt of several thousand euros.
"I signed a contract to repay the old debt and pay the new bills. What I paid, I borrowed, I don't know how I'm going to proceed... Now I've received a bill for 50 euros, I don't know where to pay," said Vera.
She said that, because of the shared meter, she has to share the bill for the electricity used with her mother-in-law, with whom she does not speak, and who moved with her son and grandson to the shack next to theirs when the electricity was reconnected.
