The book "Bird list of Montenegro with bibliography", the first professional publication of this type related to the bird fauna of Montenegro, was published in in partnership with the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Center for the Protection and Study of Birds (CZIP), BirdLife International and with the financial support of Montenegro Airlines.
Montenegrin names of birds are published for the first time in the book.
According to the published data, 348 species of birds have been registered in Montenegro so far, out of 533 species so far registered in Europe, or 65 percent of the European birdlife.
"From the total number of species registered so far, 215 species belong to safe nesting sites, seven species are possible nesting sites, while 10 species are considered extinct. 106 species are considered residents, i.e. species that spend their entire life cycles in Montenegro. 109 species of birds registered in "Montenegro belongs to migratory nesting birds. The appearance of 20 species represents historical data because they have not been registered on the territory of Montenegro for at least 30 years," the CZIP announced.
Out of the total number of species (348), 266 species are seen regularly in Montenegro, while 14 species are seen occasionally.
"The richness of the bird fauna of a country is observed through the total number of registered species or, more often, the number of nesting species. In Montenegro, the density index of nesting sites is significantly above the Balkan average (0.435) and amounts to 0.563. This is contributed by the diversity of habitats: from the sea coast, across salt flats, freshwater lakes, semi-steppes, canyons, dense forests, mountain plains and high mountain peaks. On the other hand, Montenegro is located on one of the four most important corridors for birds in Europe - the Adriatic migration route, through which millions of birds migrate every year to Africa and vice versa".
According to the CZIP, compared to other European countries, Montenegro ranks 39th in terms of area, while in terms of the number of nesting sites it ranks 22nd above Hungary, which is almost seven times larger than Montenegro. Likewise, there are more nesting sites in Montenegro than Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia or Switzerland.
"Publishing this publication is the basis for creating the Red List of Birds of Montenegro, which will be the subject of ornithologists' work in the coming months. The bibliography of ornithological works on the bird fauna of Montenegro published until this year contains 457 literature units. The authors of this publication are ornithologists Darko Saveljić and Mihailo Jovićević," the announcement concludes.
