Today, the Environmental Protection Agency organized a light walking tour in the area of the potential protected natural asset Cijevna Canyon, as part of the celebration of June 5 - World Environment Day.
As announced, the agency joined its activities to the European Commission's "Green Week 2015" campaign, whose motto is "Nature - our health, our wealth".
The Director of the Agency, Ervin Spahić, said that the Agency, since its foundation, has been marking the most important environmental date for the 6th year - the World Environment Day.
"As in previous years we have organized numerous cleaning and reforestation actions, this year we have decided to organize an easier walking tour in the area of the potential protected natural asset Canyon Cijevna, in the direction of Kuća Ujkić - Firza. This event has already been announced on the website of the European Commission," he said.
According to Spahić, from an ecological point of view, due to its great biodiversity and landscape value, the Cijevna canyon is one of the most attractive in the region.
"As a prerequisite for the sustainable valorization of the Cijevna canyon, it is necessary to declare a part of the canyon (from Dinoša to the border with Albania) as a protected natural asset, given that this area was recognized as an area of rich biodiversity in the past," he said.
Spahić said that the part of the canyon located on the territory of Albania should be given the status of a protected area.
"The initiative dates back to 1986 and 1987, when, according to the Spatial Plan, this area should have been protected as an area of outstanding natural value (natural monument). According to the spatial plan of Podgorica in the projection of long-term nature protection in Montenegro, the Cijevna canyon is classified as a potential object of protection as a monument of nature," he said.
As announced by the Agency, in 2009 the City Municipality of Tuza submitted an initiative with justified reasons why the Cijevna canyon should be declared a natural monument.
The project, as stated, was included in the local action environmental plan of the Capital City 2010-2014. year, and it was supported, apart from state institutions, by numerous non-governmental organizations.
"In July 2012, the project to declare the Cijevna canyon a natural monument was included with amendments in the Spatial Plan of Montenegro until 2020. However, one of the big problems of this basin is that it represents an unprotected area at the local and national level," the statement says.
As stated, the Agency will be the main bearer of the preparation of the Protection Study, which will be financed through the project "Joint Actions for the Conservation of the Cijevna River" supported by the Delegation of the European Union in Montenegro.
World Environment Day is celebrated every year, on June 5, in more than a hundred countries around the world.
On this day, which was established in 1972, the United Nations draws the attention of state governments and the general public to pressing issues of environmental protection and the need for their continuous resolution.
World Environment Day this year is being held under the slogan "Seven billion dreams". One planet. Spend them carefully".
"The well-being of humanity, the environment, as well as the functioning of the economy, ultimately depends on the responsible management of natural resources. "The facts show that people consume much more natural resources than the planet can provide," said the Agency.
In Montenegro, as announced, on the occasion of the World Environment Day, numerous activities and events were organized, with the aim of drawing the attention of the wider public to the importance and need to preserve a healthy environment.
In addition to the Agency's employees, the event was attended by representatives of the Capital City of Podgorica, Tuzi and Golubovci municipalities, representatives of the non-governmental organization Zeleni Crne Gore and interested citizens.
