The regional campaign I sign, aimed at reducing stereotypes, harmful practices and discrimination against women, started today in Montenegro.

The campaign dedicated to the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention and Suppression of Violence against Women and in the Family is implemented by the Safe Women's House.

The coordinator of the project, Jovana Hajduković, said that the campaign has been held for two years in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Slovenia, as well as Austria, stating that Montenegro is organizing it for the first time.

"The goal of the campaign is to inform citizens about the obligations that the state has assumed by ratifying the Convention, which includes comprehensive protection of women and prevention of violence, prosecution and punishment of perpetrators of violence, and an effective and efficient system for monitoring the implementation of the provisions of the Convention," said Hajduković.

She believes that no type of violence is the right way to solve the problem, adding that one of the goals of the campaign is to reduce stereotypes, harmful practices and discrimination against women.

Hajduković reminded that the members of the Safe Women's House, in the previous two months, worked intensively on the study, which, as she said, was an analysis of the compliance of Montenegrin laws and strategies with the Convention.

"We expect that at the beginning of next month we will issue that publication, which will give recommendations on what our country should do so that Montenegrin legislation and its implementation are in line with European standards," she added.

The convention entered into force on August 1 last year and, according to Hajduković, the biggest changes should be implemented in the criminal legislation - the introduction of new criminal offenses, the law on criminal procedure, free legal aid, changes to the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence.

As she announced, from the Safe Women's House, she will work on amendments to the existing legislation as part of the project. "I hope that we will be able to influence, at least in some part, that this European standard will be in Montenegro as well".
