According to the Law on Veterinary Medicine and the Law on Animal Welfare, owners are obliged to report any change in the health status of animals to veterinarians and the Veterinary Inspection. If they do not do so, they are subject to sanctions, warned Saša Đurović, veterinary inspector from the Administration for Inspection Affairs, i.e. its Bjelopolska part.

In more than a dozen villages in the municipality of Bjelopolje in the past two weeks, it is said that around 300 sheep and lambs have died. The villages of Ponikvice, Bliškovo, Kovren, Majstprovina, Laholo, Kostići and Pećarska fared the worst.

Đurović said that in the territory of the municipality of Bijelo Polje this year there are no infectious diseases whose spread needs to be prevented (TB, brucellosis and enzootic leukosis, blue tongue, Q fever), since the highly educated personnel of the Directorate for Inspection Affairs, and after reporting suspicions from by veterinarians or animal owners, undertake measures and actions to prevent the occurrence and spread.

He said that the information that several hundreds of sheep died in Bijelo Polje was "somewhat incomprehensible", and that the Veterinary Inspection in that municipality was not informed by either the veterinarian or the owner of the animals, which was a legal obligation.

When it comes to enteroxemia, which appeared in recent days in some parts of the municipality, Đurović said that this disease often occurs in this period in our pastures.

"The disease is caused by bacteria from the clostridia group (perfrigens ABCD, novyi...). Mostly the strongest animals in the herd get sick, and that's when they switch from winter kibble and concentrated nutrition to green nutrition.

Thus, unprepared animals for this type of diet take huge amounts of green food and enter a state of stress, and for bacteria such as the listed clostridia, which are normally constantly found in the body, favorable conditions are created for their growth and reproduction, and thus a change in health status animals and the development of disease symptoms", said Đurović.

He said that with this disease, animals need to be vaccinated with mandatory revaccination, according to the provided scheme.

Veterinarians from Bijelo Polje announced yesterday that, based on assessments from the field, they concluded that it was a disease popularly known as short-cut, and that the reason for the death could be that the animals were not vaccinated. After the autopsy, they sent the samples to the Veterinary Institute in Podgorica, and the rest of the herd was vaccinated and given antibiotics.
