The coverage of the city area by the city fecal sewage system in Kolašin is only about 20 percent, and the total number of households connected to that system is only 349, the data are from this year's work program of the Water and Sewerage Company.
A similar situation existed seven years ago, when WYG International experts assessed that the city was dominated by septic tanks, and that their number was between 1.300 and 1.500.
"In some parts of the city core itself, and also not in all suburban settlements, the fecal sewage system has not been built, so waste water from buildings is disposed of in septic tanks, which in most cases have not been properly built. The consequences of such a situation are soil pollution of surface and underground water which is why it is necessary to build a sewage network in the remaining parts of the city and all suburban settlements as soon as possible," says the company Vodovod i kanalizacija.
The construction of fecal sewage in that city began in 1995, when 3,4 kilometers of sewage network and a lagoon were built for the treatment of wastewater on the Breza River.
In the Water and Sewerage Work Program, which was not adopted at the last session of the local parliament, it is stated that "the development of sewage systems lags significantly behind the development of the water supply infrastructure". They also warn that by taking water to existing and new settlements, without building sewers, the ecological pressure on the environment increases.
The two previous governments did almost nothing to improve this ecologically worrying situation, and they justify this by the lack of money for large-scale investment projects. In Water and Sewerage, they say that the study on the development of the felakan sewage network has been in existence for years. However, they also claim that these are multimillion-dollar projects, which the Municipality will hardly be able to finance on its own.
The program plan of that company suggested that it is necessary for the competent municipal services and bodies, with their activities and penal policy, to influence the owners of buildings for which there is a possibility to connect to the already built city sewage system to do so as soon as possible.
Tara and Svinjača are used instead of septic tanks
Environmentalists have repeatedly warned that a huge environmental problem is that the people of Kolasin often use the Tara and Svinjača rivers instead of septic tanks, although it has not yet been determined how many sewage pipes from households are directed into the water. According to unofficial estimates, even several hundred households "solved" the problem of wastewater by using rivers instead of septic tanks or connecting to the city's sewage system.
The Socialist People's Party (SNP) announced that there are about 200 residential units next to the promenade that do not have a single meter of sewage system.
