The municipality of Berane invited the citizens for cooperation in order to implement the project "Mapping radon in Montenegro and improving the national system of protection against radon".
This project is implemented in partnership by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism and the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (CANU), while the Municipality of Berane is one of the beneficiaries.
Individual households in this city, as explained, in the coming period will be contacted by a random sample method from the old representative of the Municipality, so that radon detectors will be installed in their housing units.
Radon is a natural radioactive gas that is emitted from the soil and under certain conditions can be harmful to human health
The implementation of this project will provide precise data on whether there are areas in Montenegro where an increased concentration of radon in apartments can be expected and which areas these are.
At the meeting in the Municipality of Berane, the project leaders will also explain how to complete radon mapping in Montenegro, assess the radiological burden of the population due to inhalation of this gas, strengthen personnel and institutional capacities for radon measurement and control, innovate radon regulations and prepare a strategy for the protection of the population from radon.
The project is implemented in Berane in cooperation with the municipal secretariats for agriculture and environmental protection and planning and landscaping.
