Measuring equipment for monitoring the concentration of pollen suspended in the air was put into trial operation in Podgorica.

The equipment is installed on the roof above the Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology of Montenegro, at IV proleterske street number 19.

Within the project "Building capacity for integration of global environmental obligations in the area of investment/development decisions", which is financed by the United Nations for Development - UNDP, the Agency for Environmental Protection, is conducting activities on the development of a new indicator - Seasonal concentration of pollen suspended in the air. The project started in May 2014 and will last until the end of February 2015.

As announced by the Environmental Protection Agency, an analysis of the existing situation has been carried out so far and a report has been prepared that contains all the necessary data for defining the new indicator.

"Within the basic indicator, 26 sub-indicators have been developed, which refer to certain allergenic species present on the territory of Montenegro, with a defined degree of allergenicity and flowering period, which is particularly significant from the aspect of human health protection. At the moment, activities are focused on establishing a network for monitoring the concentration of pollen suspended in the air, developing a pollen sampling system," the statement said.

It is added that the identification of measuring points for monitoring the pollen concentration was carried out on the basis of geographical, meteorological and climatic conditions, as well as on the basis of the phenotypic characteristics of Montenegrin biodiversity and by determining the parameters for the installation of measuring equipment at each measuring point individually.

"The selection of the best available techniques (BAT) for pollen sampling and analysis will be based on positive practice in EU countries and in accordance with European standards. According to a preliminary assessment of all valid factors for the selection of measurement sites, pollen stations will be set up in Podgorica, Nikšić, Tivat, Bar and Mojkovac. In accordance with financial resources, the plan is to expand the network for monitoring the concentration of pollen suspended in the air and to establish measurements in other cities in Montenegro as well," the announcement states, among other things.
