The German Embassy in Podgorica will support the financial project "Respect life - return the weapons" whose goal is to reduce illegal weapons in Montenegro, Ambassador Gudrun Štejnaker announced at a meeting with the Minister of the Interior Raško Konjević.

Intensive work is being done on the preparation of the campaign which, after the adoption of the Arms Law, will be implemented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the OSCE Mission to Montenegro and the Center for Democratic Transition (CDT).

"They jointly noted the importance of the project not only from the aspect of reducing the number of illegal weapons, but also in the context of increasing citizens' awareness of the harmfulness of their possession and use. Minister Konjević informed the ambassador that certain norms in the Law on Weapons have been tightened, but that a stronger criminal policy is necessary courts for those prosecuted for illegal possession of weapons.

Noting that the text of the joint statement of intent between the MUP of Montenegro and the Federal MUP of Germany on cooperation in the fight against transnational crime and capacity building has been agreed, Minister Konjević emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation in this area. He added that Montenegro is aware of the challenges and that, together with other law enforcement authorities, a stronger step must be taken in the fight against corruption," the MUP statement reads.

The minister said that the key challenges in 2015 are the realization of the temporary measures from AP 23 and 24 and the fulfillment of all obligations for receiving an invitation for membership in NATO.

Ambassador Steinaker said that Germany supports reforms in these areas, for which the minister expressed gratitude.
