The spokeswoman of Democratic Montenegro, Anđela Peković, said that our society welcomes the Day of Journalists of Montenegro in an environment that has never been more favorable for the free expression of public, critical, and especially journalistic words.
"Unsolved murders of journalists as well as attacks on them do not inspire much hope that the situation for journalists and the media in Montenegro will improve in the near future, since the authorities do not show any intention to change anything in that area. We consider this unacceptable because the country that has the ambition to one day join the society of developed democratic states obliged to provide their journalists with conditions for safe journalism," said Peković.
She added that they themselves can contribute to creating a better environment for public speakers by resisting attempts to instrumentalize their profession for the needs of any address of political or criminal power.
"Resisting such formal and informal centers must be accompanied at the same time by resisting the fear that inevitably arises in circumstances where, as Prime Minister Marković said the other day, no one is protected. to conclude that, as far as the lack of protection in Montenegro is concerned, journalists have fared the worst. That the environment in which journalists work in Montenegro is full of fear can be seen in the way the Public Service reports, or does not report, on hot topics that burden our public opinion: affairs" "Koverat" and the protests of citizens in Bar against the cutting of cypress trees. We would not say that this is about a lack of courage on the part of journalists, because doing the work of journalism must inevitably entail the existence of courage," Peković announced.
The spokeswoman for Democrats said that if journalism is deprived of the courage and freedom to report on any topic without fear in a professional and objective manner, "then the result is the so-called "Barbara"-journalism, the symptoms of which can be easily seen in the way of reporting the Public services, but also other media in the service of positions of power."
"We congratulate all journalists in Montenegro and other employees of public speech on the Day of Journalists of Montenegro, at the same time inviting them not to allow their own profession to be humiliated in a way that will allow them to be made into Barbara from the highest state addresses, because, anyway, more and more Barbara , and less and less journalists," Peković concluded.
