It was impossible to walk past the Forte Mare fortress in Herceg Novi for the past two days because of the stench. Due to the failure of the sewage collector, i.e. the main sewage pump, part of the Pet Danica promenade, as well as the sea near the Žalo beach, were flooded with feces, which passers-by had difficulty bypassing.
Vodovod explains that this happens often and claims that unscrupulous citizens are to blame for the breakdowns, as well as tourists who put objects in the manholes that do not belong there: from towels, furniture to household appliances that damage the pumps.
A similar situation often occurs at the sewage collector near Stara Banja in Igalo, which was also recently "choked" with waste, which is why faeces spilled into many yards of private houses. Citizens who live in the area of the lower Riviera from Kumbor to Dom in Bijela had no water yesterday due to the damage to the 200 mm diameter pipeline near the swimming pool in Đenovići, the repair of which lasted until the afternoon hours.
The construction of the waste water treatment plant in Meljina and the collector from Bijela to Igal, which is expected to be completed by the beginning of the main tourist season next year, should contribute to a cleaner sea
and the municipality. The problem of septic tanks and the refusal of homeowners to connect to the sewage system still remains.
According to some calculations, there are thousands of septic tanks in the municipality of Herzegnov that do not meet sanitary requirements. From Kobila to Zelenika, according to the cadastre done by Dr. Ljubo Radojičić, there are 2.589 septic tanks that produce 450 cubic meters of waste water, and in the territory of the entire municipality, it is estimated that there are as many more. Most of it is carried into watercourses or their contents are directly poured into the sea.
