Herceg Novi: Forte Mare opens for tourists

The reconstruction of part of the internal premises of the Forte Mare fortress was completed, which was carried out as part of the project that provided for the touristic valorization of the new fortifications.

The Municipal Secretariat for Social Activities, according to the system, it is never too late, initiated the project in imitation of neighboring Kotor and Dubrovnik, which have been profiting from it for decades.

In the previous days, traces of many years of neglect by numerous tenants were removed from the walls of the fortress.

"Over 6 centuries old walls of the Forte Mare fortress remember the turbulent history of Herceg Novi. This fortress survived many storms and wars, but human negligence and carelessness left ugly scars that needed to be removed. A syringe was thrown over the stone, and the walls were painted over with grease paint," says senior conservator Goran Skrobanović, who led the reconstruction project.

He points out that everything was done in cooperation with the Administration for the Protection of Cultural Properties of Montenegro.

Thanks to the Novi company "Positron" and its workers who are skilled at working with stone, the work was completed ahead of schedule and with high quality. Members of the Mountaineering Club "Subra" from Herceg Novi also made a significant contribution, clearing the outer walls of the fortress from vegetation, and the entire work cost 2.600 euros. The ancient fortress, on whose walls you can "read" six layers of history down to the oldest stone - the coat of arms of the Bosnian nobles, magically attracts tourists who would like to discover its secret passages and enjoy the view from the top of the tower. Although it is not yet officially open for visits, there are concrete plans for its touristic valorization.

It is planned that the attractive sightseeing tour will start from the coast, through Forte Mare, Cala Long, through the so-called donkey's door near the Horseshoe Tower to Kanli Tower and then back past the churches of Archangel Michael, Saint Jerome and Saint Leopold in the Old Town.. Earnings from similar tour in neighboring Kotor and Dubrovnik significantly fills the city's coffers.

The Forte Mare fortress was built in the period from the 14th to the 17th century, and the final outlines were given to it by the Austro-Hungarians in 1833.
