Physical inactivity is one of the main risk factors that lead to a large number of illnesses and deaths from, above all, mass non-communicable diseases, said hygiene specialist at the Bar Health Center, Snežana Barjaktarović Labović.

International Day of Physical Activity is celebrated today.

According to Barjaktarović Labović, a proper diet, regular physical activity and a healthy lifestyle are the path to good health and its improvement, and, she added, a quality life results from this.

Physical Activity Day is celebrated since the World Health Organization's Report, titled Reducing Risks, Promoting Healthy Lifestyles, showed that nearly two million people die during the year due to physical inactivity.

Barjaktarović Labović told the MINA agency that the goal of Physical Activity Day is to raise awareness of the importance of regular physical activity in preserving and improving good health.

"It is one of the affordable and economical preventive factors, which along with proper nutrition, giving up alcohol and cigarettes leads to a healthy lifestyle," said Barjaktarović Labović.

As she stated, physical inactivity is considered one of the ten leading risk factors for chronic non-communicable diseases.

According to Barjaktarović Labović, the celebration of this day was designed to get everyone active, and the state could create as many areas as possible where physical activity can be carried out.

"We need parks, bicycle paths, playgrounds. Therefore, we need all the spaces that would allow physical activity to be carried out without hindrance", stated Barjaktarović Labović.

As she said, moderate and daily physical activity is necessary, and any longer break cancels the previously realized effects of physical activity.

Barjaktarović Labović appealed that children should be forced to be physically active as much as possible, to spend as little time in front of computers and televisions as possible, and to play outside as much as possible.

She also gave recommendations for employees.

"Those who work should use their break to go for a walk. Everything is possible, the only problem is that people will not understand how good physical activity is and what are its positive effects on health," said Barjaktarović Labović.

She said that physical activity prevents all chronic non-communicable diseases, from obesity to heart disease, coronary artery disease, osteoporosis and some forms of cancer.

"For us, food is energy, and through physical activity we consume energy. The moment when there is a discrepancy, that is, when we consume less energy than we take in through food, excess energy accumulates in the body, that is, there is an increase in body mass, at the expense of fat mass, which is, in fact, the definition of obesity," said Barjaktarović Labović.

According to her, when you take in less than you consume, you become malnourished, that is, you lose body weight.

"If someone has a normal body mass and dosed and regular physical activity, then they manage to keep their body mass stable," said Barjaktarović Labović.

She said that physical activity reduces the risk of developing high blood pressure, blood sugar, and obesity by up to 50 percent.

As she added, physical activity reduces the level of sugar and cholesterol in the blood, lowers blood pressure and blood vessel resistance, thereby improving the supply of oxygen to the organs.

Practicing physical activity, she added, reduces the number of cigarettes smoked, "and physically active people are in a better mood, more satisfied with themselves and react better to stress".

"It is very important for people to understand that if they are regularly physically active, they can prevent many diseases. Do everything you can on foot, such as going to your friends, to work, to the store. Do not use the elevator, but the stairs and do everything to our legs as an organ of movement do not apotrophy," concluded Barjaktarović Labović.
