The Montenegrin Parliament should reach an agreement regarding the VDT as soon as possible, and thereby all parties show democratic maturity and responsibility, the European Commission (EC) said.
According to the EC spokesman, Peter Stan, the parliamentary parties should show that they are capable of reaching a compromise on key reforms in the area of the rule of law.
For more than a year, the Montenegrin prosecutor's office has been in an acting state because the parliamentary majority and the opposition cannot agree on a candidate for that position.
In a statement to Radio AntenaM, Stano said that for such a situation, it is good that there is an acting director, so there is no institutional vacuum, but he performs all the duties that VDT would perform.
"The Montenegrin parliament should reach an agreement regarding the VDT as soon as possible. An important condition that was adopted by a qualified majority in the parliament is that the candidate must have the support not only of the government but also of the opposition," Stano said, adding that all parties they must demonstrate democratic maturity and responsibility.
"They need to show that they are capable of reaching a compromise on key reforms in the area of the rule of law, which include the implementation of amendments to the constitution adopted last summer," concluded Stano.
