Workers of the Skadar Lake National Park found a run-over male otter yesterday in the town of Lokve, on the main road Podgorica - Petrovac.
The National Parks announced that four otters have died in the last two years:
"As one of the precautionary measures, warning signs have been placed for drivers to drive more slowly and carefully... The otter is a species protected by law, and it is threatened throughout Europe due to various human activities."
They appealed to all drivers to drive more slowly and carefully on the roads near Lake Skadar, in order to protect the endangered species.
"Employees handed over the otter to the Natural History Museum of Montenegro to be stuffed. In 2011, NPCG launched the campaign 'Otter Wanted', with the aim of protecting this rare and endangered animal. During the last year, we mapped potential otter habitats. At the same time, a survey was conducted with the local population about the presence and frequency of occurrence of this species...", the announcement reads. It is added that it was noticed that the number of run over otters increased at high or low water levels.
"The canals under the highway, which are used by otters, are clogged with water and rotten vegetation during that period. Then they are forced to cross the highway, so in those cases, fast driving is the cause of death...", the announcement reads.
