The Parliamentary Security Committee sent a request for a statement to the Minister of the Interior Raško Konjević, the Director of the National Security Agency Bor Vučinić and the Supreme State Prosecutor Veselin Vučković regarding the uninvestigated cases of attacks on journalists and the initiative sent by the Media Syndicate.
"Immediately after the Board session on Monday, we sent letters to the state institutions, requesting the submission of information regarding the initiative of the Media Union," Board President Mevludin Nuhodžić (DPS) told "Vijesta".
The board made the decision to hold the control hearing, said Nuhodžić, after receiving information from the competent state authorities.
He did not want to bid on dates when that might be expected, but it is common practice for government agencies to respond within two weeks.
On January 13, the Media Union of Montenegro launched an initiative for an urgent control hearing of the heads of the MUP, ANB and VDT due to frequent attacks on journalists and numerous unsolved cases from previous years.
The immediate cause was the attack on "Dan" journalist Lidija Nikčević and the planting of a bomb in front of the window of the editor-in-chief of "Vijesti". Since then, there has been another attack on "Vijesti" property, when an official car was set on fire two days ago.
"Given that journalists' lives are at risk in the workplace, we believe that you are invited to do everything in your power to protect freedom of information in a country that cannot be a member of the European Union without this condition," the initiative reads.
The media union also expects the MPs to use their influence and support the initiative they launched with the Human Rights Action (HRA) for journalists to receive adequate legal protection as a basis for creating a safe environment for their work, similar to that of officials.
