Society of young ecologists Nikšić: Garbage dumps became a reality

One of the basic prerequisites for a preserved environment, emphasized the Association of Young Ecologists Nikšić (DMEN), is the proper treatment of waste.

However, as pointed out by the DMEN, the waste management system is rather underdeveloped in Montenegro, and modern standards and practices are very poorly applied, so that almost every day a new illegal landfill appears.

"Poor waste management has been characteristic of Nikšić. The natural depression in Mislovo Dol has long been filled by waste disposal, and now a dome is being formed that is visible even from a greater distance. There is no solution to this problem in sight in the near future, and the consequences can be multiple. For bad waste management in Nikšić is not only the responsibility of the local and state institutions, whose activities are described in this description, but the citizens also have a great responsibility. Thus, along the bed of the river Gračanica, on the road itself, the amount of waste is so great that one traffic lane cannot drive in its length of 20 meters", stated in the press release of DMEN.

Problems with waste management, as pointed out by this NGO, are almost the same in all municipalities in Montenegro and last quite a long time, and in a very small number of cases proper and standardized treatment of waste is carried out with its prior classification and separation of raw materials that will be reused.

"Garbage sites in natural depressions, bays or sides, which do not meet even the minimum standards and procedures in terms of waste disposal, are in most cases the only option for waste disposal. One of the most famous cases of illegal waste disposal in Montenegro is the location on the Vasovo waters. Locals "Beransela, rightly, demand the relocation of the temporary landfill from this land, and their concern is more than justified, especially when you take into account that different types of even hazardous waste are deposited on that land. The temporary nature of this landfill has been too long," warns the DMEN -a.

In their statement, it is emphasized that the Municipality of Berane should not understand civil activism as a protest, but as help in finding a sustainable solution.

"For us, the old man Đorđije Tomović is the embodiment of the fight for a healthy environment, which should be handed down as such to future generations. The misdemeanor procedure that was initiated against this old man should be reconsidered and it is not popular to use the power of the state on him", warn the DMEN.
