Old ID cards are valid until the end of the year

The Montenegrin Assembly unanimously adopted an amendment to the Law on Identity Cards, which extends the validity of old identity cards until the end of the year.

The Assembly sent a recommendation to the State Election Commission to allow citizens who have old, laminated ID cards, issued before 1993, to vote.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivan Brajović, said that the amendment to the Law will enable citizens who have not taken out new documents to vote.

"Since the last extension of the deadline, requests for new documents have fallen, and we cannot, as a responsible state, extend the validity period of documents countless times," he said.

Brajović reminded that until the end of the year, according to the Election Law, persons who do not have Montenegrin citizenship can remain on the voter list.

"From the beginning of next year, there can be no talk of any extension, and from then on the voter list should include those who have new documents and Montenegrin citizenship," he explained.

Vuković: The adoption of changes is a common interest

The MP of the Democratic Party of Socialists Miodrag Vuković said that the common interest of all parties is the adoption of changes to the regulations, because, as he stated, over 60 thousand people have old documents.

This, he believes, reduces tensions before the elections, and there can be no accusations of a selective attitude towards citizens.

"We are not selective and we do not know whose voters these are, we care that they choose and decide their fate," Vuković said.

60.000 with old documents

Socialist People's Party MP Neven Gošović said that out of 60 people with old documents, about 16 of them have an old laminated identity card, which was issued before 1993.

He added that these are people who live in the countryside, whose identity card has a permanent validity mark.

Gošović said that the Committee for the Political System, Judiciary and Administration sent an instruction to the State Election Commission to allow people with plasticized ID cards to vote on October 14.
