The Hercegnov company Vodovod i Kanalizacija launched an educational campaign that promotes socially responsible behavior in the protection of communal infrastructure and the environment. Promoters are Antonije Pušić-Rambo Amadeus and academic painter Darko Vlaović.
"Sewerage is the first social network and the first form of civilization," Antonije Pušić stated and explained that the cooperation with the Herzegovinian Waterworks began because of a "deep problem" - with sewage, which the residents of the part of town where his family lives had.
Together with Vlaović's witty drawings, he designed the slogans that will be used in the campaign: Respect civilization - save sewage; We'll have better sewage if we don't throw things down the toilet...
He also suggested that warnings in the form of stickers warning of what should not be flushed down the toilet should be placed in all public, catering and toilets used outside households.
"Negligent citizens consider drains, manholes and open channels to be garbage cans or landfills. That's why there are blockages in pipelines, blocking of pumps at sewage plants, overflows in manholes and the like", said the director of Water and Sewerage, Olivera Doklestić.
She stated that the workers are forced to clean the grates of the pumping stations every day, and twice a day in the summer. When the pumps are clogged with various types of solid waste, the pumps are automatically turned off, the sewage water level rises and it is necessary to intervene urgently, explained Doklestić.
"It's just that we find living people in the sewers," Goran Simović, the head of sewer network maintenance, vividly described the situation. He stated that wet wipes, and similar research has been done in some European cities, create the biggest problem in the sewage network. He stated that the sewage network in the municipality of Herzegnov is 90 kilometers long, with 8 pumping stations that are looked after by 9 workers.
The head of the wastewater treatment plant, Nenad Konjević, stated that they process from five to 15 thousand cubic meters of wastewater and that the oil that is thrown into the toilet bowl is a huge problem that should at least be reduced by the education they have started.
