The days of Saint Vasilije Ostroski ended on May 12, the day when Vasilije, who was declared a saint due to his healing powers, passed away.
On this day, which is the glory of the Nikšić Cathedral and the city, several tens of thousands of citizens attended.
A river of people flooded the streets of Nikšić at around 18:XNUMX during a solemn procession led by Patriarch Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral, and Bishop Joanikije of Budamljana and Nikšić with numerous clergy.
The liturgy, which has been going on for the 16th year in a row, gathers a large number of believers not only from Nikšić, but from all over Montenegro and beyond.
This morning, as well as the night before the day of Saint Basil of Ostrog, the Ostrog monastery was visited by tens of thousands of believers, both from Montenegro and from the surrounding countries, Serbia, Republika Srpska, but also from Croatia, Macedonia, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Bulgaria , in order to approach the saint.
Saint Vasilije Ostroški (Jovanović) was born in 1610 in the village of Mrkonjići in Herzegovina. He became a monk in the Trebinje Monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
He came to the Ostrog monastery after the destruction of the Tvrdoš monastery where he lived and worked as an archbishop. He became the Metropolitan of Herzegovina in 1639.
He died in 1671, and his relics are kept in the Vavedenj Temple, in the Upper Monastery.
