In the water area of the elite nautical-tourist center and marina for mega yachts "Porto Montenegro" in Tivat, yesterday in the late afternoon a new more serious environmental incident occurred when an undetermined amount of oil spilled into the sea.
The greasy stain covered almost the entire surface of the former Arsenal's small mandrake, and there was also oil in the sea between the yachts tied to pier II, that is, part of the ships on the "G" pontoon of the marina in the so-called to a large mandrake.
All this, in a situation where a large number of people were walking around the marina, was accompanied by an intense, strong smell of diesel fuel, and the stain was not eliminated even by the attempt of a part of the marina staff to try to break it up and reduce the ugly visual effect of greasy spots on the water surface.
"On Saturday, March 17, at 17.45:XNUMX p.m., the competent services in the marina "Porto Montenegro" identified the pollution caused by the spill of oily substances at the location of the small mandrake, the so-called Venice square. At the same moment, the marina staff informed all relevant entities about the entire situation, on headed by the Port Authority. After that, the procedure of removing the mentioned pollution was started in accordance with the prescribed procedure", informed "Vijesta" from the PR service of "Porto Montenegro".
According to the press release, preliminary on-site investigations have shown that the possible source of leaking oily substances is either the construction site located in the immediate vicinity or Tivat city drains for atmospheric precipitation.
"All responsible parties are working together to ensure that similar situations do not recur. The marina management was on site again this morning and confirmed that the pollution has been remedied and brought under control. We will continue to apply pollution protection measures and do everything we can it is in our power to prevent such and similar incidents from happening," the reply to "Vijesti" states.
Although the marina, the majority owner of which is the Canadian billionaire Peter Munk, has emphasized on several occasions that they have a good system for the prevention and remediation of the consequences of sea pollution, examples of oil spills and oily liquids in "Porto Montenegro" are still too frequent for such an elite nautical center.
In the past year, there have been 6-7 similar incidents with small or large oil spills into the sea, which was not nearly so often the case when the Tivat military shipyard Arsenal operated at this location.
Therefore, the multimillion-dollar yachts in Tivat so far, from the point of view of spilling oil and oil into the sea, have proven to be much dirtier than the warships that have been based here for decades.
