Instead of fresh air and the smell of the sea, tourists in Herceg Novi during the summer were often greeted by an unpleasant smell.

On some beaches, even in the city, especially under the fortress Forte mare, it is impossible not to smell the unpleasant smell of sewage.

According to the technical director of JP "Vodovod" Milorad Velaš, the most problems were at the Stara spa in Igalo, then along the Riviera, in Kumbor, Baošići and Bijela.

"Vodovod" workers had an average of about 70 interventions per month, only on blockages, for which, as Velaš claims, the human factor is responsible in 90 percent of cases.

"It's incredible what people are able to throw into the sewers - from various rags, blankets, to quilts and sweaters," said Velaš.

Solving the sewage problem was a priority, and the teams on duty worked 24 hours a day," said Velaš.

Human factor to blame for the accident

A few days ago, under the Forte mare fortress, where the main sewage pump is, more than three meters of various rags were taken out, and the same thing happened on Sunday in Baošići.

It often happens that the utility companies cannot clean the blockages even with pumps under a pressure of 250 bar, so "Vodovod" has to hire divers, who clog the underwater outlets.

The human factor is also to blame for the recent accident in Zelenica, when a large sewage pipe that goes under the sea was broken, so divers helped in that case as well and replaced the pipe.

The sewage system in Herceg Novi does not have the capacity to receive surface water, so problems arise during heavy rains. All sewage is collected near the Forte mare fortress, from where it goes 1.600 meters through underwater outlets.

Since the large lids do not seal 100 percent, the stench near the Forte mare fortress is felt for most of the year. The solution to that problem can be seen with the construction of a waste water processing plant, which is planned in Meljina.
