Residents of the village of Mahala in Zeta thwarted the drivers of the company "Transpetrola" in their intention to bury huge amounts of garbage in the immediate vicinity of the Morača river.
The vice-president of the Mahala local community, Darko Dragović, said that he saw by chance that waste was being dumped on the river bank.
"I noticed two days ago that something was being brought in and dumped. However, only when I approached, I saw that trucks were bringing garbage and that the landfill, in some places up to five meters high, was being covered with gravel about 20-30 centimeters thick. I called neighbors and we forbade the further disposal of garbage," Dragović said, adding that he informed the police and the Municipal Police.
The gravel pit of Raj Šuškavčević, the owner of Transpetrol, is located in the immediate vicinity of the disputed landfill.
"Transpetrol" trucks filled with garbage were parked in the yard of the gravel pit yesterday.
Locals outraged
The village of Mahala has about 1.500 inhabitants. Locals were outraged, believing that "it is about genocide and corruption".
"Communal police inspectors Nada Bojović and Velizar Radinović came at our invitation, but after talking with the head of that service, Radislav Vojvodić, they simply left. We believe that certain institutions are corrupt and we ask the competent state authorities to protect Mahala and remove garbage," he said. Dragovic.
Local resident Srđan Radon jić said that their environment was destroyed and the air was polluted.
Radonjić noted that part of the village is not connected to the city's water supply, but uses water from a well.
"The lower part of the village uses well water. But after so much garbage, the stench of which can be felt for hundreds of meters around, we feel that we can no longer use the water. It would be simply incredible if all of this did not mix with the underground water. Let them extract gravel, let them it's simple, but this exceeded every measure," said Radonjić.
The President of the Local Community, Jagoš Klikovac, did not want to comment on the incident. "Vijesti" could not get a comment on the event from the company "Transpetrol" last night.
Landfill unnecessary
Darko Dragović said that the garbage was dumped on the confiscated property of the Klikovaci and Radović brothers, which is now kept as state property.
"I remember that as children we ran barefoot through the meadows all the way to the river, where there is now garbage, bathed and drank water from the spring. We have nothing against Šuškavčević exploiting the gravel, but the landfill near the river is unnecessary and unacceptable," said Dragović.
