A new survey on media literacy in Europe has shown that the Balkan countries are the least "resistant" to the spread of fake news.
Research published by the Open Society Institute in Sofia, chaired by investor George Soros, includes an assessment of education quality, media freedom and public trust, ranking the susceptibility of 35 countries to disinformation.
According to the research on media literacy in Europe, Croatia is in 24th place, Serbia in 29th place, Montenegro in 31st place, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 32nd place, and Albania in 33rd place in the list of 35 countries.
The survey showed that the Balkan states are "the most vulnerable" when it comes to the spread of fake news, which is characterized by "rumors, deceptions, outright lies and disinformation from foreign governments or enemies", Euronews reported.
It was stated that the Scandinavian countries are best equipped to resist "post-truth" information in which, as stated, "objective facts have less influence in shaping public opinion than evoking emotions or personal conviction."
Macedonia and Turkey rank worst when it comes to media literacy, with Finland at the top of the list with a "strong public education system" and "widespread critical thinking skills", which are seen as key to "resilience" against fake news. writes Euronews.
