The fishing ban in the Skadar Lake National Park (NP) starts on Friday, March 15 and will last until May 15, 2019, the National Parks of Montenegro announced today.
The statement adds that during this period, catching all types of fish and other aquatic organisms, except eel, is prohibited.
The National Parks said that this is the period when cyprinid (warm water) fish species retreat to the shallower and warmer parts of Lake Skadar due to reproduction, and it is necessary to protect them from hunting and at the same time enable undisturbed spawning.
"We especially emphasize that catching fish during the period of the fishing ban harms the overall biodiversity of Skadar Lake NP and is a criminal offense. On the occasion of the entry into force of the fishing ban, the Public Enterprise for National Parks of Montenegro - Skadar Lake NP will conduct intensive patrol activities in order to preserve the fish stock ", said the director of the Public Enterprise National Parks of Montenegro, Elvir Klica.
He added that the coordinated activities and cooperation of all competent entities in connection with NP Skadarsko jezero contribute to more efficient protection of the fish stock and at the same time to the prevention of illegal activities in order to protect the natural values of this protected area and at the same time the transboundary water body.
"In the nature protection system, the support of the Montenegrin media is also very important in spreading the mission about the necessity of preserving the most important values of the Montenegrin national parks, and in this case raising the awareness of citizens about the harmfulness of illegal fishing and the importance of preserving the fish stock in the Skadar Lake National Park," he concluded.
