The dog is a favorite pet, and the majority of abandoned dogs in Montenegro used to be owner's dogs, Ivan Ivanović from the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs said today.

He stated this at a round table under the slogan "A friend from dreams, but without a roof", which was organized by the Directorate for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

"The campaign aims to point out the importance of better information and education on the subject of abandoned dogs, with a focus on responsible ownership. The fact that most of the abandoned dogs previously had owners speaks volumes about the irresponsible attitude towards dogs," he said, adding that it is often the case that a family has fun with a dog for a few months but soon gives up, which indicates an irresponsible attitude.

He explained that because of all this, it is necessary to raise awareness to a much higher level, which is also required by laws on veterinary medicine, protection and welfare of animals, public order and the Law on Nature.

Ivanović pointed out that within the framework of activities related to animal welfare and solving current challenges in this area, the Directorate for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs also provides support to the projects of non-governmental organizations.

"For this reason, in the previous period, through public advertisements of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, we financed projects related to infrastructure, support for sterilization of dogs," he said.

The round table was organized by the delegation of the European Union, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Directorate for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs.
