WWF Adria and TNC (The Nature Conservancy) welcome the decision of the Government of Montenegro to declare the lower course of the Zeta River a protected area.
"This decision is the first step in the complete protection of the Zeta River. Now it is necessary to adopt the initiative of the WWF and the Ecological Association 'Ozone' 'Za zelena Zeta', which aims to protect the upper course of the river. This would protect the Zeta River along its entire course , in accordance with the national legislation in the field of nature protection", welcomed the decision of Milija Čabarkap from WWF Adria.
They point out that Montenegro has the opportunity to become an example to other countries in the region that nature protection and sustainable development are the only way to a future where people and nature prosper. "By extending protection to the upper reaches of the river, the entire area and its inhabitants will have the opportunity to create new values based on nature conservation and sustainable development."
"At this moment it is important to celebrate this decision of the government, but in order for this decision to be truly so significant for Montenegro, it is necessary to focus on the implementation of the law and good management of this protected area, with the cooperation of institutions and the non-governmental sector", concluded Dragana Mileusnić from TNC.
