The Center for Investigative Journalism of Montenegro (CIN-CG) is strongly protesting the arrest of journalists Gojko Raičević, editor-in-chief of the In4S portal, and Dražen Živković, editor-in-chief of the Borba portal.
Last night, they were brought in for an informational interview and kept in custody because, as claimed in the statement of the Police Directorate, they are suspected of having started the criminal act of spreading panic and disorder in order to publish false news.
"This is the second case in the last few days that journalists have been arrested for allegedly spreading panic and disorder and publishing fake news. In our opinion, these arrests, even when it is established that they are untruths and violate the ethical code of journalists, are inadmissible and premeditated in order to limit human rights and freedoms and create a sense of legal insecurity. The biggest producer of fake news in Montenegro is precisely this government, which creates an environment of fear and spreads panic due to the alleged defense of the state against external enemies and its own citizens. Thus, key citizens are swept under the rug the country's problems - the absence of reforms, the lack of rule of law and corruption at the highest level, and in Montenegro it is slowly introducing a state of emergency. This is indicated not only by the arrests of journalists, but also by an entire parliamentary group," states the CIN-CG press release signed by executive director Milka Tadić Mijović.
CIN-CG appeals to all journalists to cover topics of public interest while respecting professional standards and the Code.
