Officials from the Capital City are trying to find a new location for the cemetery in Podgorica, after spending several years on the procedure of the New Cemetery project in the area of Donji Kokota, only to recently find out that this option is not profitable.

The procedure was initiated in 2016, and the reason for this is the fact that there are fewer and fewer opportunities for the expansion of the two city cemeteries in Čepurci and in Zagorič.

The planning document, which governs the location in Kokoti, received the support of councilors on November 14, 2017.

The consortium of Winsoft and CAU was in charge of the project, however, after the analysis, it was determined that it is necessary to build a kilometer of access roads at that location and expropriate as much as 240.000 square meters of land.

This means that the City Hall at that location would have to allocate millions of euros just for the land in order to pay the citizens for the plots.

For this reason, the director of the "Funeral Company" in Podgorica, Srđan Miljanić, recently asked the Secretariat for Planning and Spatial Planning to establish decisions with elements of urban planning and technical conditions for determining a new location for the City Cemetery.

As he pointed out in his letter to the Secretariat, due to the aforementioned reasons, the new location needs to be established on land owned by the Capital City.

The former city administration of Miomir Mugoša planned a new cemetery on Ćemovsko polje, opposite the aluminum plant, but they quickly gave up on that idea. That option is now updated again.

Although in the end it turned out that the cemetery in Kokoti was unprofitable, according to the documentation, the cemetery in Kokoti was supposed to have 12 chapels and a crematorium, and eight blocks for the burial of distinguished and deserving citizens.
