The president of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (CANU) Dragan K. Vukčević was elected president of the Euro-Mediterranean Academic Network (EMAN), CANU announced.
The previous president of EMAN was academician Pavao Rudan, general secretary of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
The members of EMAN are academies of sciences and scientific institutions from 28 Mediterranean countries, and the headquarters of EMAN will be in the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts in Podgorica in the mandate until 2022.
In addition to Vukčević, who was elected to the position of president, four vice presidents were also elected:
1) Prof. Malika Allab-Yaker, President of the Algerian Academy of Science and Technology
2) Catherine Brechignac, Honorary Permanent Secretary of the French Academy of Sciences
3) Prof. Yohanan Friedmann, Israel Academy of Natural Sciences and Humanities
4) Prof. Ahmet Nuri Yurdusev, Turkish Academy of Sciences
EMAN is an autonomous network that brings together the academies of sciences of the Mediterranean countries, a non-political and non-profit organization, whose mission is to promote growth and development within the scientific field, and contribute to a better understanding of Mediterranean cultures. The founding assembly of EMAN was held in Alexandria on June 21, 2010.
The specific goals of EMAN are: a) drafting and providing advice to governments and regional organizations; b) promoting cooperation among the academies of the Mediterranean region; c) building the capacity of academies to provide independent expert advice to governments; d) assistance to scientific communities to establish national independent academies, where they do not exist; e) organizing scientific conferences, seminars and symposiums; f) publication of statements, reports, studies and other publications on topics important to the Mediterranean.
