Montenegrin university professors, intellectuals, civil activists and citizens, as well as intellectuals from the region, issued a joint statement calling for "the preservation of civil harmony".
"After almost ten days since the announcement of the election results and the democratic change of government after thirty years of rule by the same party, we are addressing the Montenegrin and foreign public, not wanting to contribute to attempts to cause unrest, encourage nationalism and undermine the democratic will of citizens by our silence at this delicate moment." it is stated in the statement signed by numerous doctors, professors and activists.
As they state, they are "disturbed by messages that have been arriving for days from various addresses, both from Montenegro and the wider region, in which individuals are labeled as traitors to national interests, and with which they try to put pressure on political decision-makers at the moment of the constitution of the new government , we want here first of all to appeal for the calming of tensions, especially when they are fueled from positions of power and public responsibility."
"We also want to draw attention to a specific example of raising tensions and drawing targets in a particularly sensitive context. At the public gathering of supporters of the outgoing government, organized on Sunday, September 6, 2020, on Independence Square, despite the legal provisions on reporting public gatherings and with open violation of measures to combat the covid-19 virus pandemic, in an already electrified atmosphere, Nemanja Batrićević, a teaching associate at the University of Montenegro, publicly flagged, in front of, according to the police administration, 50 thousand people, Dritan Abazović, Luka and Žarko Rakčević and Filip Adžić , in the following words: "The latter is a hurray for Dritan Abazović, Luka and Žarko Rakčević, Filipe Adžić. If you hand over Montenegro to the Chetnik dukes, to do with it as they have been dreaming for 75 years, you will be remembered as the worst traitors of your race." Batrićević with this, but also with the statement "When the bloodthirsty hordes finish what they started, in Montenegro it will be just as narrow for you and us", contributed to causing panic among a large part of Montenegrin citizens, which is a criminal offense according to the criminal code of Montenegro. should be sanctioned," the announcement reads.
They pointed out that they appeal to the Prosecutor's Office to investigate whether there are elements of a criminal offense in this speech and react accordingly.
"What further scares us is the fact that Batrićević is a teaching associate at UCG, which after his performance yesterday calls into question his principledness and professional impartiality. In this regard, we express our regret that an atmosphere is being established in which cultural and academic workers reach for the most mundane and disgusting theses based on national and religious divisions, thus trying to humiliate the bearers of change among their compatriots and all citizens of Montenegro. (Un)aware of the power of the publicly spoken word, they lead to it is those whose mouths are full of stories about the dark nineties in front of the house of one of the opposition leaders who are shouting cries from that unfortunate time, which further inflames the whole situation and leads to inter-national suspicion and disharmony," the statement added.
In the end, they express concern about the "contradictory approach in respecting the NKT measures that are in force, in part the absence of an adequate reaction to the organization of large public gatherings in Podgorica and Cetinje, despite the fact that the restriction of public gatherings is still binding, and that the number infected with the covid-19 virus is increasing every day in an extremely worrying trend".
"We are writing this with the intention of contributing to the preservation of dignity, both personal and collective, at this critical moment, avoiding further conflicts and tensions, and building civil peace, solidarity and trust. It is time to lower the flags and stop counting in the squares, and to by word and deed will contribute to the creation of a more civil and just Montenegro, which, we believe, is the greatest expression of patriotism," concluded the statement signed by:
