The Ministry of Science of Montenegro, in cooperation with the International Institute from Trieste "Abdus Salam - ICTP", is organizing a Scientific Forum entitled 'Forum on New International Research Facilities in South East Europe', which will be held on January 25 and 26, 2018. in Trieste, the government department announced.
As they said, the forum is supported by UNESCO, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Society of Physicists and the International Development Foundation (FIT).
There will be more than a hundred participants at the Forum, among them high representatives of the European Commission (the second person in charge of research and innovation of the European Commission, Mr. Robert Jan Smits), representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Society of Physicists (EPS), ESFRI, prominent representatives of the scientific community (CERN, HIT, CNAO, GSI/FAIR, DESY...), as well as representatives of the scientific and business community of the Region.
At the Forum, the ministry points out, the final results of the conceptual solution for both options of the International Institute for Sustainable Technologies in Southeastern Europe will be presented to the scientific and political public for the first time.
"At the Forum, the welcome speech will be given by: Fernando Quevedo, Director of the ICTP Institute, Martin Krause, Director of the Directorate for Europe at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Meera Venkatesh, Director of the Department of Physics and Chemistry at the International Atomic Energy Agency, David Lee , the Secretary General of the European Society of Physicists (EPS), as well as the Director General of the Directorate for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, Mr. Robert Jan Smits," the Ministry of Science said.
After that, they add, the attendees at the Forum will be addressed by the Minister of Science of Montenegro, Dr. Sanja Damjanović, who will open a discussion about the new project in the region of Southeast Europe and present the first preparatory steps and progress on the political and scientific scene achieved during 2017, with the aim of realizing SEEIIST project.
"The conceptual solution of the institute's first option, i.e. the Fourth Generation Synchrotron Radiation Source, will be presented by the president of the international commission who is the author of this concept, Dr. Dieter Einfeld, former technical director of SESAME and the ALBA project, while the conceptual solution on Hadron cancer therapy and research in biomedicine using protons and difficult ions to be presented by the president of the second group of the international commission, Prof. Ugo Amaldi, founder and president of the TERA Foundation," the ministry said.
As they said, Montenegro initiated one of the most beautiful projects in the spirit of 'Science for Society', which would be unique in the region of Southeast Europe and significantly influence its development, as well as enable this part of Europe to become competitive. The initiative was originally proposed by Professor Hervig Schopper, former Director General of CERN.
"The entire Region quickly recognized the importance and benefits, and with the official signing of the Declaration of Intent at CERN on October 25, 2017 by eight countries, the Initiative was transformed into a regional project," the Ministry of Science concludes.
