According to the measurement results published by the company Cable.co.uk, the average Internet access speed in Montenegro is 25,07 Mb/s for 20.245 measurements, the Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (EKIP) announced today.

"According to these results, Montenegro is in 63rd place, ahead of Serbia in 65th place with an average speed of 24,74 Mb/s, Kosovo in 73rd place with an average speed of 20.30 Mb/s, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 88th place with an average speed of 15,66 Mb/s, Albania in 104th place with an average speed of 12,36 Mb/s and North Macedonia in 109th place with an average speed of 11,48 Mb/s", the EKIP press release states signed by the executive director Darko Grgurović.

The announcement adds that the British company Cable.co.uk, in cooperation with the open Internet database M-lab, has published the results of research on Internet access speeds, comparing data from over 557 million tests from 221 countries.

"The fastest Internet access in the world is enjoyed by citizens of Liechtenstein with an average data transfer speed of 229,88 Mb/s. The global average Internet access speed is 11,03 Mb/s. The global table of average Internet access speeds for 2020 shows that Western Europe dominates with an average speed of 81,19 Mb/s, and eight of the top ten countries in the world are located in Western Europe. The average Internet access speed in Eastern Europe is 39,08 Mb/s, and the top ranked country from Eastern Europe is Hungary which is in 10th place with an average internet access speed of 99,74 Mb/s. The lowest average internet access speed is in the poorest countries in Africa and is 3,8 Mb/s," the EKIP statement reads.

Along with those institutions, they said that according to a survey by Cable.co.uk and M-lab from three years ago (August 2017), Montenegro was in 71st place on a list that included 189 countries at the time.

"According to the results at the time, Montenegro was the worst-ranked country from the surrounding countries with an average internet access speed of 5,85 Mb/s for 4.940 measurements. The Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Activity indicated at the time that the measurements were made on servers outside Montenegro and that M-lab's measurements are significantly different from the data available to the Agency. Namely, from the Internet speed measurement platform that the Agency had, the average Internet access speed at that time was 20,037 Mb/s. It was requested that the measurement server be installed in Montenegro as well, which was done, after which more realistic data on the average internet access speed in Montenegro was obtained," said EKIP.

They state that from this year's results of Cable.co.uk and M-lab, it can be seen that Montenegro has made significant progress and has taken eight places better in the ranking list, which, as they state, has also been expanded by 32 countries, compared to to research from three years ago.

"Such a significant increase in the measured average speed of Internet access and improvement of results, in addition to the already mentioned installation of the measurement server in Montenegro, were primarily contributed by the multi-year high level of investment in the development of electronic communication networks and services, the offer of service packages with ever-increasing speeds, and the increased demands of users and an adequate, technologically neutral, regulatory framework in Montenegro," concludes the EKIP announcement.
