The Liberal Party (LP) will announce its position regarding the Bill on amnesty when the parliamentary session with that item on the agenda is scheduled, said leader Andrija Popović, stating that they have reservations about which persons the amnesty applies to.

He said that the deputies of the ruling coalition respected the will of about 17 thousand citizens of Montenegro and submitted the Bill on amnesty in its original form to the parliamentary procedure.

Popović expects that this draft law will be on the agenda when the plenary spring session begins in March.

"There are some reservations regarding the persons to whom the amnesty applies, but the position of the LP will be known when the parliamentary session with this agenda item is scheduled," Popović told the MINA agency.

Now, as he explained, the opinion of the executive authority and the parent board is awaited.

Popović said that they "heard" the negative attitude of the judicial authorities regarding the proposed law, but that they did not officially receive it.

According to him, a larger number of amendments have been announced, but it is yet to be seen in what form this Bill will come to the plenary session.

Popović said that the law has already deeply divided Montenegro, which, he believes, is to be expected.

Popović said that every amnesty brings many problems and reminded that the last Amnesty Law was adopted in 2013.

"At that time, many convicted persons were placed in an unequal position, and that draft law was somehow discriminatory towards persons who, due to all the amendments, were not covered by the amnesty law," said Popović.

He added that the Assembly must make the most difficult decisions.

"And this is one of those, with complete understanding of the pain of the injured families," said Popović.
